Postcolonial Encounter II : The Present of the Past

In my work, I connect 'there' and 'here' through the visual form, beginning with my graduation project in 2008, exploring the meaning in connecting things and allowing viewers to articulate and extend their imagination individually. My 2010 work I’m on the way of turning back follows a similar approach. It was first exhibited in a group show at VWFA, and later presented in a new form at my first solo exhibition at Galeri Chandan, where Encik Pakha acquired it for his collection, where it has remained since. Fourteen years later, it is being shown again at Galeri PUTEH. Interestingly, this painting now extends its reach, creating new connections with my recent works, and is being displayed in this collection and new works exhibition titled Now & Then. Re-examining past works after several years often leads to new interpretive paths. Revisiting earlier themes and recreating them from the perspective of the present can, if one is not afraid of self-repetition, enable the artist to delve deeper into the subject matter, leading to the discovery of new points of focus. In my work, I do not engage in the depiction of pain or oppression as a means of critiquing social inequalities, nor do I intend to prompt viewers to reconsider their attention to marginalized groups. Instead, my paintings focus on the fluidity of experience and the connections between individuals, as well as between people and places. Through the pursuit of these expressive pathways, I seek to connect the past and the future, thereby actualizing the present. A recurring theme in my practice is the representation of diverse ethnicities and immigrant communities. This focus stems from my own background as a descendant of Chinese immigrants and my formative experience growing up in the segregated environment of a Chinese New Village. In this particular work, I aim to convey the sense of place of Bukit Bintang, a diverse and mixed community, to explore the subtle, interdependent, and mirrored relationship between two generations of migrant groups.

These artworks delve into the poignant moments where gazes meet. In this era of global migration, the encounter and connection between two individuals is a profoundly human experience. It's akin to two points converging, forming a path of shared vision where gazes overlap, intertwine, and exchange sentiments. Today, as we embrace a culture of shared experiences, the barriers of singular cultural systems are softened, allowing for the exploration of diverse perspectives and enriching the tapestry of life. For portrait artists, each portrait is a challenge to capture not just the physical likeness, but the essence of the soul, a delicate dance between what's seen and unseen. It's a lifelong pursuit, a journey of self-discovery reflected in strokes of paint. In my artistic journey, I find solace in exploring the mundane, infusing ordinary scenes with deep contemplation, slowly unraveling the layers of meaning. As the saying goes, "No man ever steps on the same river twice." Each encounter, each gaze shared, leaves an indelible mark, weaving together the fabric of our collective existence. These portraits, born from fleeting encounters in the flux of life, serve as a testament to the beauty of human connection. With each stroke of my sketches, I aim to capture the transient nature of our existence, preserving the memories of our brief encounters in the vast expanse of time, until we are but wisps of memory in the twilight of our years. "Malay Peninsula Encounter" documents the people I encountered while traveling from the south to the north of the Malay Peninsula from 2013 until 2024. In addition to depicting the faces of various local ethnicities, I also documented those who came from across the seas and worked hard in this country. Surviving in a multicultural nation, the distance between individuals is both close and distant, and the competitive ecological environment often leads to tension in interpersonal relationships. However, at the same time, the cultural and ideological differences between ethnic gaps enrich the urban texture of this land. The clash and confrontation of ideas often result in the emergence of new collective values.

Design for Rectilinear Space Confronted with the challenge of rectilinear space posed by event planners, my initial instinct was to reinforce depth and extend the artist's gaze within the pictorial space, viewing it as a process of movement. With this notion in mind, the dynamic tension inherent in Caravaggio's paintings, which is particularly adept at capturing the intense dynamism of figures, became the motivating force through which I sought to pay homage. The coffee shop series represents a condensed portrayal of diverse social spaces. Within this body of work, I depict the presence and activities of neighbouring individuals, reflecting the inner restlessness of my own existence. This serves as a reshaping of lived experiences and memories. By re-organising facial expressions and interactive behaviours of characters and linking individuals of various ethnicities within a single composition, I compress the dimension of time and gather fragments of space into an imagined whole. Through the representation of others through my own reflection, I find an opportunity to reassess my own forms of existence and value.
